Meet Mrs. VanEngen
Hello!
I'm Cheryl VanEngen. This 2022-23 school year is my twenty-third year teaching. I love my job, and I love being a part of the terrific learning community that is Mattawan Schools.
Being the art teacher at the Later Elementary is the very best gig. I get to witness the exploration and creation of works by young artists daily. Art is a way to process, celebrate and respond to the events, ideas, and relationships around us. Art is communication. Art is emotion. Art is important.
A little about me...
My husband Jay teaches history in Kalamazoo, is a talented musician, and directs young music students and bands at the Kalamazoo Academy of Rock. Our son Will is sixteen years old. He is a Junior at MHS. He loves music and plays many instruments.
I have an adorable, sweet pup named Mavis. I work to protect the habitats of Monarch butterflies. I also enjoy watching hockey--Go Red Wings! In 2018, I published my first children's book, As You Grow.
More than anything, I like to learn new things. I'm sure it's why I became a teacher: every day presents opportunities to learn something new or see something known in a new way.
