27th Annual Symbolic Monarch Migration
Intro Video
This year, Mattawan Later Elementary has been blessed with a donation from the Audubon Society of Kalamazoo (ASK) and our long-time benefactors Ilse ("the Butterfly Lady") Gephard and Russ ("the Birdman") Schipper. Their grant will allow all of our students to participate again in the annual Symbolic Monarch Migration Project.
In art class, we will make a variety of artistic butterflies. We will also make a larger "ambassador butterfly" for each classroom. These we will soon send to Mexico -- JUST AS THE REAL MONARCH BUTTERFLIES begin their annual migration south! Our partner classrooms in Mexico will care for/"overwinter" our butterflies (just as the REAL butterflies spend their winters in Mexico!). As spring approaches and the days begin to lengthen, the butterflies (both REAL and SYMBOLIC) will begin their journey north. In May/June, we will receive many paper/art monarch butterflies in our mailboxes that were made in the fall by kids all over the US and Canada. We wish them all (paper and living alike!) a safe journey!
This project brings awareness, education and funds across North America to protect the plight of the threatened Monarch Species. You can learn more about the program HERE.
